COUNTER TO MY INTELLIGENCE BY LANI LYNN VALE REVIEW!

Title: Counter To My Intelligence
Series: The Heroes of the Dixie Wardens MC #7
Author: Lani Lynn Vale
Genre: Adult, Motorcycle Club Romance
Release Date: January 6, 2016
Sometimes the heart wants what it can’t have.
That’s the motto Silas Mackenzie, the president of The Dixie Wardens MC, has lived by since he was a young man.
Now he’s well on the way to middle age, has three grown children, and he’s lusting after a woman he should definitely stay away from.
Especially not one that his ex-girlfriend had given birth to, and happened to be only twenty seven years old.
Sawyer isn’t a young girl at heart, though.
She’s seen the inside of a jail cell for eight long years, and every one of them she spent paying for a crime she didn’t commit.
Silas Mackenzie knows as soon as he sees her that the girl has sacrificed enough.
And maybe…just maybe…so has Silas.
It’s time for Silas Mackenzie to get what he deserves, and put a little bit of happy back into Sawyer’s world, one rough, bearded kiss at a time.

“I like your vest.”

“It’s called a cut,” he muttered laughingly.

“What’s a cut?” I asked.

The hail and rain got worse, hitting the roof and the side of the garage like tiny little battering rams.

“A leather vest,” he quipped.

I giggled against his chest, turning my face so it could rest against his neck.

He growled when I kissed his exposed throat, but otherwise didn’t move.

“Joking aside, it’s my club. The cut is me. The top rocker, which is the white banner at the top, is our club name,” he said.

I felt along his back as he spoke, feeling what he was saying as he explained what each one was.

“The bottom rocker is our club’s location. We’re in Benton. We have other chapters all over the south,” he explained. “On the front is my name, club title, and the city again.”

I knew he was explaining this to me to get my mind off the fact that the roof was shaking around us, literally.

“I can’t believe Dallas hasn’t at least come to check on me,” I muttered darkly.

He tangled my hands in my hair, and I looked up at him…or where I thought he was.

“Your brother is a shit head. And I don’t think he even realizes that he is. Because if he did, he wouldn’t be telling your parents anything about how you were. My guess is that he really is worried, but he doesn’t know how to handle that worry. So, he closes himself off, telling himself that by telling your mother how he thinks you’re doing, he’s helping. Which, in reality, he’s not,” Silas said. “Maybe it’s time you had a talk with him, let him know you don’t appreciate being treated as a child.”

I agreed, and I’d already planned on doing that.

“I was going to do that today, but then he had that huge freakin’ party,” I told him darkly. “And I had to park in the street.”

He lowered his mouth down to mine.

“Well, then it’s a good thing he’s preoccupied, because right about now I could really fuck you on top of his car and he’d never even know,” he said tightly, lifting my body off the bench and laying me down on the car’s hood.

I laughed. “You know,” I said as he stripped my shorts from me. “This is my brother’s pride and joy.”

“Well your brother’s pride and joy is about to become our fuck stand,” he growled, then he was on me.

If you’re looking for an older man, younger woman, look no further than Counter To My Intelligence, the 7th book in the Heroes of the Dixie Warden MC, by Lani Lynn Vale. For those who have waited for Silas’ story, he finally gets his due with Sawyer, a young woman who has more experience than most people twice her age. Silas is the president of the Dixie Warden MC who protects his club at all cost and has a soft spot for those who are in need of a helping hand. Sawyer came out hardened and in need of assistance after she served a sentence for a mistake she made when she was barely old enough to drink.

I have always enjoyed this series, and this book is no different. I’ve wanted Silas to find someone to love him and he finds the perfect match in Sawyer. She comes across as both strong but vulnerable, and it’s heartbreaking to watch her rebuild her life after everything was taken from her. She busts her tail to make sure she doesn’t put herself in the same position, and Silas is there to catch her when she falls.

As usual, this book includes several aspects of suspense, but it’s definitely not the focal point of the novel. It keeps the novel moving without slowing down the pace. Overall this is a solid addition to the series, and I can’t wait to read what happens between Sterling and Ruthie.

I’m a married mother of three. My kids are all under 5, so I can assure you that they are a handful. I’ve been with my paramedic husband now for ten years, and we’ve produced three offspring that are nothing like us. I live in the greatest state in the world, Texas.

Sayer Cole and Zeb Fuller couldn’t be more different. She’s country club and fine-dining, he’s cell-block and sawdust. Sayer spends her days in litigation, while Zeb spends his working with his hands. She’s French silk, he’s all denim and flannel. Zeb’s wanted the stunning blonde since the moment he laid eyes on her. It doesn't matter how many smooth moves he makes, the reserved lawyer seems determinedly oblivious to his interest—either that or she doesn't return it.

Sayer is certain the rough, hard, hot-as-hell Zeb could never want someone as closed off and restrained as she is, which is a shame because something tells her he might be the guy to finally melt her icy exterior. But just as things start to heat up, Zeb is blindsided by a life altering moment from his past. He needs Sayer’s professional help to right a wrong and to save more than himself. He can’t risk what’s at stake just because his attraction to Sayer feels all consuming. But as these opposites dig in for the fight of their lives, battling together to save a family, the steam created when fire and ice collide can no longer be ignored.

MY REVIEW

Jay Crownover knows how to write a winner, and Built continues this streak. As much as I loved the Marked Men series, the first in the Saints of Denver series is just as amazing. Sayer Cole is related to one of the Marked Men and looking to rebuild her house, while Zeb Fuller is just the man for the job. This is a story of opposites attract, and boy do sparks fly when they get together.

Zeb is one who owns up to his mistakes, and makes no apologies for who he is. He breathes new life into Sayer, helping her rebuild more than her house. Sayer is your atypical heroine, having grown up in a difficult household. Ms. Crownover was able to make me love someone who would normally be seen as cold. The writing is flawless, the storyline original, and the introduction of new characters to love in the magical world Jay Crownover creates with every new story.

EXCERPT

It was late.

I was really tired.

I had a full day at work tomorrow and I needed to be up early enough so I could swing by the gym before I went into my office.

I had also agreed to have drinks with a fellow attorney after my final court appearance of the day. It was a semidate I had already rescheduled twice, so I couldn’t reasonably back out again without looking like a complete jerk. Doing any of that on a few hours of sleep was less than ideal, but I was getting used to running on fumes lately. I, too, was having dreams that woke me up in the middle of the night, that left me shaken, heated, and too wound up to stay in bed.

Only my dreams weren’t terror inducing—they were good. Oh, so fucking good. They were better than good. They were the best dreams I had ever had. Hell, the dreams were better than any kind of actual sexual experience I had ever had while wide-awake. They were the kind of dreams that had me jerking up from a dead sleep while I panted and sweated. I woke up twisting in my sheets and touching myself because the man that starred in each and every single one of them was nowhere around.

Control was everything to me, and Zeb Fuller made me want to lose it even when he was sound asleep in his own bed all the way across Denver.
