HOME ICE BY CATHERINE GAYLE REVIEW

HOME ICE

USA Today bestselling author Catherine Gayle presents another novella in the Portland Storm hockey romance series.

There’s only one person Portland Storm head coach Mattias Bergstrom allows to see his soft side: his sister, who was born with Down syndrome. She lives in Sweden, so he doesn’t worry he’ll accidentally reveal anything other than the hard-assed defenseman-turned-coach his players know. At least not until his sister’s doppelganger leaps for one of his young D-men before the team’s charity skills competition and melts Mattias’s frozen heart.

Paige Calhoun has her hands full with four exceedingly boy-crazy, hockey-loving daughters—three teens and a pre-teen with Down syndrome. Everyday life is a challenge. Taking all four girls to the StormSkillz event with no assistance? The magnitude of her task was daunting enough before her youngest spotted the hockey player of her dreams and barreled through the crowd to claim him.

The team’s sexy-as-sin coach intervenes, and Paige feels just as boy crazy as her daughters. Charmed by the youngest, he decides to give the girls a weekend they’ll never forget. It never crossed his mind that, in doing so, he might end up giving himself an unexpected happy ever after with Paige.

When it comes to hockey, Mattias has a Home Ice advantage. But when it comes to life? He likes the look of Paige’s arena.

MY REVIEW

Home Ice by Catherine Gayle is the perfect addition to her Portland Storm series. This novella is a standalone, but I would definitely recommend reading the rest of the series because it’s a great sports romance series and will provide some backdrop to Mattias Bergstrom. Mattias is the head coach of the Storm, and he is known for being hardcore on the ice, so it’s heartening to see him soften up to Paige Calhoun and her girls.

Paige has her hands full handling her four girls, especially her youngest daughter, Sophie. Mattias, or Bergy as he’s known, recognizes his own sister in Sophie, who also has Down syndrome. I definitely fell in love with Bergy watching the way he acted toward Sophie. He was exactly what Paige and her daughters needed, providing them support and making sure they were taken care of. Paige deserves a medal after dealing with four boy crazy girls, and she had my respect from the very beginning of the story. She was an independent woman who took care of herself, but she was still willing to allow Bergy within her life. This was a great story, and I can’t wait to read more about these girls (hopefully)!

BURY THE HATCHET BY CATHERINE GAYLE REVIEW!!

BURY THE HATCHET

He was poised to be an elite goalie for a contending team.

Hunter Fielding has long since proven himself to be one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. The problem? His former team had another (slightly better) backstop. They left Hunter out to dry, the upstart Tulsa Thunderbirds claimed him in the expansion draft, and he made a few stupid comments about backasswards Oklahomans. Now the T-Birds say the only way he can redeem himself is to make nice for the media with some local goody two shoes who’s made some mistakes of her own.

Oklahoma’s sweetheart could do no wrong until she could do no right.

Tallulah Belle Roth was the reigning Miss Oklahoma USA until a night of out-of-control drinking, a naked foray in a hot tub with very bad boy, and a bunch of lowlights on TMZ. Now she’s been stripped of her crown and is facing the censure of the same people who made her out to be Little Miss Perfect. Tallie won’t ever get her title back, but her life is another matter—and the only way the public will allow her to do that is if she presents herself as happily settled with someone else under Oklahoma’s eye.

The marriage is to be in name only—one year of sickeningly-sweet lovey-dovey PDA, all to get their detractors to bury the hatchet. Those kisses and tender moments for the cameras take an emotional toll, though. Can in name only be enough?

MY REVIEW

Bury the Hatchet by Catherine Gayle is a spin-off of the Portland Storm series with the Tulsa Thunderbirds, the expansion team that includes some of the favorites from the original Storm. Hunter Fielding is one such player, playing goaltender for the new team. After sticking his foot in his mouth when he first joins the team he’s looking to redeem himself. Enter Tallulah Belle Roth, who also needs to reclaim her tarnished reputation. They both need to get back in the good graces of the good people of Oklahoma, so they hatch a plan to pretend to be happily married to give everyone something else to talk about.

It was interesting to get to know Hunter in this book, and his backstory tugged at my heartstrings. They both made mistakes, and the road to redemption is long and hard. Tillie is no different, and the way Ms. Gayle shows these two broken people coming together made for a great read. There was a bit of suspense to keep the story going, and I enjoyed reading about this new team. There were a couple of old favorites who popped up, and I’m loving the new team! Another great read!

OVERTIME BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW

Overtime by Toni Aleo
Series: Assassins Series #7
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Down and out with an injury keeping him away from the game, Assassins’ defenseman Jordie Thomas lives for the blades of his skates on the ice and the feeling of oblivion off it. With no choice but to heal, he’s forced away from the sport that runs through his veins. With everything at stake and darkness setting in, he quickly finds himself spiraling even further out of control. As his life begins to come crashing down around him and his contract with the Nashville Assassins on the line, he’s given an ultimatum. Ready or not, Jordie is forced to face his past, the fears that consume him, and the one woman he let walk away.

Kacey King had her professional dreams come true, yet her heart was battered and broken. With an Olympic gold medal around her neck, she’s ready to look forward to the future but without the one man she wanted in it. She’s missing the key pieces of her heart she left months ago with the only person who was capable of destroying it, causing her to falter in all her plans to move on.
>In the game of life, there are winners and losers, and neither Jordie nor Kacey want to be on the losing bench. If only Jordie could convince Kacey he’s a changed man and that he wants her right by his side as his MVP for the biggest and best parts of a life they build together. With emotions running high and the game on the line, can two proud people find happiness with each other, or will their hearts and souls be left in the cold? Will they see that sometimes having someone by your side who knows the good, bad, and broken is better than going it alone and losing everything through the back of the net? They are out of time on the game clock and fighting for the win of their lives.

But overtime was made for an Assassin like Jordie.

MY REVIEW

After I read Jordie’s novella I figured there was no way he’d become redeemable to me. I couldn’t stand him, and thought there was no way he’d be able to earn Kasey’s love. I was wrong. He totally rocked in Overtime, and I loved him in the newest installment of the Assassins’ series. This book can be read as a standalone book, but I do recommend reading the rest of the series because I love it and its well worth the trouble.

We met Jordie and Kasey in Laces and Lace, and their relationship is tumultuous to say the least. To watch Jordie’s transformation was amazing, and I loved the way he strove to protect Kasey and show her he was all in the relationship. Kasey has done a good job of creating a life for herself that doesn’t include Jordie, but it was refreshing to watch their interactions. I truly enjoyed the story, but I felt as though at times they seemed a bit juvenile (like calling each other dorks and their overuse of social media) that I wouldn’t expect of two professionals. It wasn’t enough to really knock the book but it was a bit grating since I’ve seen it in some of her other books. In addition Kasie seemed unable to move beyond her own feelings to see Jordie's disease wasn't about her until it was almost too late. Overall though it was a great addition to the series and I can’t wait for the next one!

THE ALLURE OF DEAN HARPER BY R.S. GREY COVER REVEAL!

Title: The Allure of Dean Harper
Author: R.S. Grey
Release Date: Oct 2015
Find on Goodreads
From: LilyNBlack@Gmail.com
To: JosephineKeller@VogueMagazine.com
Subject: You’re a flippin’ idiot
Good morning my dear, naive friend,
I hope you’re enjoying a breakfast of regret and sorrow.
Why?
Because you sent me to work for Dean Harper, aka a control freak in a tailor-made suit. Sure he owns the trendiest restaurants in NYC, but c'mon Jo, his ego makes Kanye West look like the Dalai Lama.
He's the type of guy that only hears the word “no” when it's followed by “don’t stop.”
Working for Dean Harper would be like selling my soul to the devil…and before you say anything, I don’t care if the devil has punch-you-in-the-gut brown eyes and an ass to match. My soul isn’t for sale.
Love,
Regretfully yours,
Lily
The Allure of Dean Harper is a full-length standalone romance with overlapping characters from The Allure of Julian Lefray. Both books can be read separately. Chronologically, The Allure of Julian Lefray happens first.

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way, I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things... everyday.
I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors include Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I'm a comedy geek and love all things "funny". Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.
